performance benchmarks
Selecting a Benchmark Group
Employers should strive to select the benchmark group that it believes most likely represents the reference group of its employees. For example, an employee working as an assistant in a physician's office might compare himself/herself against others in the healthcare industry or against others nationwide with a similar education level. Making this determination is not always obvious or easy. Therefore, Normative Express allows employers to select reporting of industry norms only (if available), nationwide norms only, or both. In addition, performance benchmarks based on demographic norms are available as a single selection.
The nationwide norms are representative of all industries, all job levels, and all demographics. Therefore, if an employer cannot make a reasonable determination of which benchmark group is appropriate, the nationwide norms should be viewed as the most reliable comparison group for interpretation of the results.

Industry Group Norms
The 2009 updates added six industry group norms that can be used with the JDI and JIG for measuring employee job satisfaction.
  • Education Services: Elementary and secondary schools; colleges and junior colleges; universities; business, technical, and trade schools and training; other schools, instruction, and educational services.
  • Financial Activities: Finance, insurance, real estate, rental and leasing services.
  • Government (Public Administration): General government and support; executive offices and legislative bodies; justice, public order, and safety activities; administration of human resource programs, environmental quality and housing programs, economic programs and space research; national security and international affairs.
  • Health Care and Social Assistance: Hospitals; health services; social assistance.
  • Non-Profits (Excluding Health Care and Social Assistance): Educational, religious, cause-based, arts/recreation, and other types of non-profit organizations.
  • Professional and Technical Services: Legal services; accounting, tax preparation, bookkeeping and payroll services; architectural, engineering, and related services; specialized design services; computer systems design and related services; management, scientific and technical consulting services; scientific research and development services; advertising and related services; veterinary services; other professional, scientific and technical services.
Demographic Norms
The 2009 updates also added five demographic norms that can be used with the JDI and JIG as performance benchmarks. For example, if managerial status is selected, the report will compare the scores of the employer's managers with the manager norms, and scores of the non-managers with the non-manager norms, to generate performance benchmarks. Each questionnaire includes the relevant questions for each demographic norm.
  • Age: 18-28; 29-35; 36-42; 43-50; 51+
  • Education Level: High School or less; Some College; Bachelors; Completed Some Post-Graduate; Advanced Degree
  • Job Level Within the Organization: 1 to 5 scale
  • Job Tenure: 0 to 2; 3 to 5; 6 to 10; 11 to 20; 21+
  • Managerial Status: Manager; Non-Manager
Archiving of Data
Normative Express automatically archives the survey data for a period of two years so that employers can compare their survey results over time and better understand the success of any intervention programs or new initiatives.
